Job Description
Location: CBD
Salary Package: $130k + super
Role Highlights:
This Senior Financial Accountant role offers a rare opportunity to step into a true 2IC position within a rapidly scaling retail and property services group. You will act as the technical accounting lead, support the Head of Finance across the full finance spectrum, and gain accelerated exposure to tax, treasury, group reporting, and commercial finance in a highly visible role with the CEO and ELT.
Role Overview
This retail and property services group is scaling rapidly across multiple sites. Following significant recent expansion and the opening of flagship properties representing $55m+ in capital investment, the finance function is transforming from a founder-led operation to professional infrastructure capable of supporting continued growth. The scope is genuinely broad: statutory accounting, group reporting, tax compliance, audit management, cashflow, treasury, and supporting budgeting and forecasting. You'll gain exposure to the full finance spectrum while the CFO develops you toward commercial finance and leadership responsibilities.
This is 'flying the plane while fixing it' – they have strong systems but best practice is yet to be built. Balance sheet reconciliations need to hit 100%, month-end close must tighten to 5 days, statutory compliance must shift from reactive to proactive. You'll build standardisation across manual, Excel-heavy workflows while navigating stakeholders who are passionate about what they do.
For someone with 3 - 4 years of solid financial accounting experience who's hungry to expand into commercial finance and leadership, this role offers an accelerated development path. The challenges are real, the exposure is exceptional, and the CFO's track record of developing future leaders speaks for itself.
Responsibilities
- Statutory financial statements, external audit coordination, and group reporting across all entities ensuring full IFRS compliance
- Month-end close coordination with accuracy and timeliness, driving balance sheet reconciliations to 100% completion with sustainable processes
- Australian tax compliance management (GST, PAYG, FBT, income tax) and advisory relationships with external tax advisers
- Group consolidation including IFRS 16 lease accounting, intercompany eliminations, and multi-entity reporting
- Treasury and cashflow management with daily monitoring, weekly forecasts, and optimal liquidity maintenance across entities
- Payroll review and approval (fortnightly), AP/AR oversight, and payment run management ensuring accuracy and policy compliance
- Budget and forecast support including variance analysis, financial commentary, and insights that drive commercial decision-making
- 2IC responsibilities providing backup coverage and leadership during Head of Finance absences, stepping confidently into senior stakeholder conversations
Candidate Profile
You're CA or CPA qualified with minimum 2 - 4 years' financial accounting experience in multi-entity groups. Australian GAAP, IFRS, and tax compliance (particularly GST, PAYG, FBT) are second nature. You've prepared statutory accounts, managed external audits, and coordinated month-end close without hand-holding.You thrive in transformation environments where you can build it from scratch. Fast-paced startup or scale-up experience has taught you to juggle priorities, manage ambiguity, and deliver quality under tight deadlines. Your stakeholder influence is built on curiosity and engagement, not authority. Most critically, you demonstrate genuine commercial hunger. You want to move beyond pure compliance into FP&A and commercial insights. You ask 'why' questions, connect financial data to business outcomes, and are building toward a finance leadership career.
Culture & Benefits
You'll join a corporate-professional culture with high flexibility, high trust, and low micromanagement. The finance team is newly formed, harmonious, and outcomes-driven with a 'one team' ethos. Direct, respectful communication is valued, honesty and constructive challenge are encouraged, not avoided.
Working from their corporate office on a hybrid basis, you'll visit operational sites monthly across multiple locations. High visibility in a small corporate office means your quality work gets noticed by senior leadership.
The real value proposition is career development. This exceptionally broad role compresses experience across technical accounting, tax, treasury, and commercial finance that would normally take 2-3 years into 12-18 months. The CFO's proven track record of developing future finance leaders means genuine pathway to Head of Finance roles as the business scales nationally, positioning you for significant salary growth in your next move.
