Role Highlights:

Career-defining opportunity to work with the Head of Data at a values-driven national retailer. This is a high-impact role where you'll build the foundational understanding of the organisation's data ecosystem, directly influencing strategic decisions that drive customer value and operational efficiency. Report into a supportive data leader while establishing trusted relationships across the business.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Head of Data, you'll be responsible for mapping and documenting the organisation's data landscape across key business units. On a weekly basis, you'll engage with stakeholders across operations, supply chain, and finance to understand their processes, systems, and data flows. You'll conduct hands-on analysis using SQL and Python to investigate data structures, trace data lineage, and identify opportunities for improved data quality and governance. Daily, you'll be building relationships, gathering requirements, documenting workflows, and translating complex technical findings into business-relevant insights.

This role offers the unique opportunity to shape the data strategy for a large-scale retail operation from the ground up. You'll contribute to establishing data governance frameworks, identifying data ownership across departments, and building the foundations for scalable analytics capabilities. Your investigative work will directly support the organisation's mission to deliver exceptional value to customers through better-informed operational and commercial decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Map data flows across the organisation's systems including SAP and SQL-based platforms, documenting critical data elements and their lineage
  • Conduct hands-on data analysis to understand current data structures, identify quality issues, and develop business rules for data governance
  • Work closely with business units to gather requirements, understand operational processes, and identify how data is created, used, and managed
  • Build trusted relationships with stakeholders across departments to facilitate knowledge transfer and capture operational expertise
  • Document workflows, processes, and data ownership structures to create a comprehensive view of the data ecosystem
  • Identify candidates for data governance and accountability within business units, supporting the establishment of data stewardship
  • Contribute to the development of the broader data strategy for the National Data Office, translating discovery insights into practical frameworks
  • Translate complex data and process information into clear, business-relevant insights for diverse stakeholder groups

Candidate Profile

You are a curious and persistent professional with proven experience documenting data systems and processes in large-scale enterprise environments. Your technical foundation in SQL and Python enables you to assess data structures and understand how information flows across platforms like SAP or similar ERP systems. You bring strong analytical thinking to investigate current states, identify gaps, and translate operational knowledge into actionable insights.

Your communication and relationship-building skills are exceptional—you can engage stakeholders across operational teams, earn their trust, and gather the information needed even in complex, fast-paced settings. You're comfortable challenging assumptions and navigating competing priorities without formal authority. Ideally, you have exposure to FMCG, retail, supply chain, or similarly operationally focused industries. Most importantly, you're passionate about understanding how data drives better outcomes for organisations and their customers, and you care about the impact of your work on both efficiency and customer experience.
