Role Highlights: We are seeking an experienced Payroll Officer for a short-term assignment to support the payroll function during a systems transformation project.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with end-to-end payroll processing across weekly payroll including terminations, back pays, and reconciliations. Proficiency in Preceda or Dayforce is highly desirable, along with a strong understanding of award interpretation and payroll legislation.

You will need be detail-oriented, customer-focused, and able to hit the ground running in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 

Role Overview

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Officer will be responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll for one of the company’s divisions. While time and attendance are primarily managed through Kronos, the role requires a level of manual data entry making strong proficiency in Excel, particularly VLOOKUPs and Pivot Tables, essential. 

Key responsibilities include maintaining payroll and leave planning systems, updating employee records, interpreting EBAs and employment contracts for shift allowances, and responding to payroll-related queries from staff and management.

Responsibilities

  • End to end processing of company payrolls (weekly, fortnightly and monthly). 
  • Maintenance of payroll system and leave planning system. 
  • Updating and maintaining payroll records.
  • Liaising with staff and management on payroll related queries.
  • Maintaining leave, sickness and overtime reports.
  • Interpreting awards/agreements and contracts in relation to overtime and shift allowances etc.
  • Payroll reporting to meet internal and statutory obligations.   
  • Payroll administration.
  • Calculation and processing of termination payments.
  • Processing increases and calculation of back pays.
  • Assisting Payroll Manager with month end consolidation.
  • Assisting Payroll Manager with reconciliation and payment of payroll and group tax.
  • Reconciling payroll related GL accounts.
  • Calculating annual leave and LSL provisions/accruals
  • Accountable for a safe environment within responsibility, by implementing and evaluating safe work practices, improving safety performance and celebrating safety achievements.
  • Participate in the Safety Evaluation program as required
  • Ensure all incidents, accidents within control are reported and investigated.
  • Ensure all team members contribute to safety.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrated experience in using a HRIS and payroll system, Preceda Payroll and Peoplesoft HRIS is highly desirable
  • Ability to produce quantitative reports that provide meaningful information from payroll.
  • High attention to detail
  • Experience in roles showing a high level of efficiency and strong process orientation.
  • Strong Customer service focus
  • Understanding of payroll legislation and processes
  • Ability to interpret awards and relevant legislation
  • Experience in running payroll operations in a complex environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to consult, influence and deliver solutions.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
