Job Description

Location: Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane (Fully Remote - Office Available)
Salary: $160-180K + Super + 20% STI
Role Benefit: Own finance operations in rapidly scaling subscription business; Direct partnership with CFO; Build scalable finance foundations for future growth

Role Overview
Reporting to the CFO, as Finance Manager, you will own the day-to-day finance function for a fast-growing direct-to-consumer food subscription business scaling from $55m toward $100m+ revenue. This is a hands-on, operational role where you will be the engine room of financial control, ensuring the business operates with one clear version of financial truth.
With direct accountability for month-end close, inventory valuation, gross margin analysis, and management reporting, you will work in a complex, inventory-heavy environment managing 100+ SKUs across multiple storage locations including 3PLs and cold storage facilities. Your work will directly free the CFO to focus on strategy, capital, and growth initiatives while you ensure financial integrity and operational excellence.
In your first 6-9 months, you will take ownership of the month-end close process, master the inventory costing model across the supply chain, and establish reliable forecasting and gross margin analysis. This is a rare opportunity to build scalable finance foundations in a high-growth environment with a clear pathway to Head of Finance as the business continues to scale.

Responsibilities

  • Month-End Close & Financial Control: Own end-to-end month-end process including journals, accruals, reconciliations, and balance sheet integrity; oversee bookkeeper to ensure accuracy and posting quality
  • Inventory & Stock Valuation: Master inventory valuation across all locations (3PLs, cold storage, in-transit); reconcile stock balances between warehouse reports, supplier invoices, and GL; maintain COGS accuracy as a single source of truth
  • Gross Margin & Commercial Analysis: Deliver detailed margin analysis by product, box type, and channel (subscription vs non-subscription); perform variance analysis across pricing, costs, yield, and freight; identify margin leakage early and partner with Operations and Marketing
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Own annual budget process with CFO; maintain rolling forecasts; track actuals vs budget with clear variance explanations; support scenario modelling for growth planning
  • Cash Flow & Working Capital: Prepare short-term cash flow forecasts; monitor working capital movements including inventory, payables, and receivables; identify cash timing risks early
  • Management Reporting: Prepare monthly management accounts with concise commentary on performance, margin movements, and inventory changes; build and maintain core KPI reporting; support board packs and investor reporting

Candidate Profile
You are a CA or CPA qualified finance professional with 7+ years of hands-on accounting experience, including proven ownership of month-end close in complex businesses. You have strong experience in inventory-heavy environments - ideally FMCG, food, protein, manufacturing, or ecommerce - and understand the intricacies of stock valuation, costing methodologies, and COGS accuracy. Your technical grounding is solid, but you're commercially minded and can partner effectively with operations and commercial teams to translate numbers into clear business insight.
You are highly competent in Excel or Google Sheets, with a strong systems, controls, and process mindset. You're comfortable working autonomously in fast-moving environments, dealing with ambiguity, and managing conflicting timelines. You're confident in challenging data that doesn't look right and have the communication skills to build relationships and influence stakeholders. Experience in subscription or ecommerce businesses, exposure to 3PL or cold-chain logistics, or supporting audits and investor due diligence would be highly regarded. As a hands-on operator, you bring self-management, accountability, and a passion for solving problems and building scalable finance operations.
