Role Benefit: Step into a newly created FC role at the centre of a landmark strategic transformation and growth agenda; Own financial control, governance and team leadership for a complex, multi-entity APAC business; For an experienced FC, this is the role you need under your belt to progress to a GM or CFO
Role Overview / Description
This is a newly created Financial Controller role inside a business undergoing a significant strategic transformation that is reshaping the organisation's structure and future direction. The organisation is the market leading distribution and services business across the Asia Pacific region, supplying technology components to various sectors. Despite being the largest business of its kind across the region, it holds single digit market share in a $150 billion global market - the growth potential ahead is substantial.
Reporting to the Divisional CFO, you will be the technical authority and controls lead for the APAC business, owning the month-end consolidation, balance sheet governance, statutory reporting, and SOX compliance framework across a multi-entity structure spanning the Asia Pacific region. You will lead a team of approximately 20, including two Senior Accounting Managers, and will carry full accountability for the integrity of the financial control environment as the business prepares to stand on its own two feet.
The timing of this role is deliberate. The business is undergoing a significant strategic transformation and the organisation wants this person embedded, relationships built, and controls optimised well before that milestone is reached. You will be in the room as the audit scope is renegotiated, reporting lines evolve, and the finance function is shaped for its next chapter. This is not a role you step into and maintain - it is a role you step into and build.
As the transformation progresses, the scope of this role is expected to grow meaningfully. For the right candidate, this is the platform from which a GM Finance or CFO appointment becomes a very real next step.
Responsibilities
- Financial Control & Consolidation: Own the monthly close and consolidation process across multiple legal entities, ensuring the integrity of the APAC financial results reported into group consolidation systems and US head office
- Balance Sheet Governance: Lead the balance sheet reconciliation review cycle, report on risks and opportunities, and deliver a no-surprise balance sheet each period
- Statutory Reporting: Oversee the preparation and accuracy of APAC statutory accounts in compliance with AIFRS, ASIC requirements, and US GAAP obligations
- Technical Accounting: Provide authoritative technical accounting advice across the APAC business, including position papers, new standard adoption, and M&A accounting support
- SOX & Internal Controls: Maintain and strengthen the internal control environment across key financial reporting processes in accordance with US SOX requirements
- External Audit Management: Own the relationship with external auditors, manage the audit process end-to-end, and ensure no audit adjustments or material control deficiencies
- Systems & Process Improvement: Identify and implement improvements to financial control and reporting processes, driving efficiency, consistency, and quality across the team
- Team Leadership: Build, develop, and lead a high-performing financial control team of approximately 20, including two Senior Accounting Managers across the Asia Pacific region
Candidate Profile
You are a CA or CPA qualified Financial Controller (ideally with Big 4 training) and a minimum of five years in financial control within a complex, multi-entity organisation. You bring dual-standard technical accounting capability across AIFRS and a track record of leading accounting teams through periods of meaningful change. Experience managing or contributing to an external audit process end-to-end will be highly regarded, as will any exposure to ERP implementation or systems transformation.
You are someone who leads with quiet confidence, technically authoritative when facing out to US head office counterparts, auditors, and senior leadership, and genuinely nurturing when developing the team around you. You are comfortable operating in ambiguity, can hold your own in a room with offshore leadership, and don't need certainty to lead with conviction. You are proactive by nature, structured in your approach, and driven by the prospect of building something - not simply running it. If you are an experienced FC looking for the role that takes your career to the next level, this is it.
Culture & Benefits
This organisation is the market leading distribution and services business across the Asia Pacific region, supplying technology products to over 180,000 customers globally. Part of a broader group generating approximately $10 billion in sales globally, the business is now embarking on a landmark strategic transformation that will see it chart its own course towards long term growth. The Sydney head office is home to the leadership team and the majority of the finance function, meaning this person will be at the centre of the action from day one. This is a business that takes pride in what it does, moves with purpose, and offers the right finance leader a genuine opportunity to make their mark on a landmark chapter in its history.
